@mercenary: No, it’s a highly (as in fatal withdrawal) addictive substance that only they can provide. Tiny bombs and remote-activated poisons just don’t cut it, because you might not be able to trigger them. Of course, these people don’t seem to be familiar with the Secret Conspiracy List (don’t “disappear” people who find out, or you end up having to “disappear” whole population centers) or the Additional TV Tropes Evil Overlord Vows (isn’t there something there about not testing on orphans?) anyway, so they might not have heard of the Evil Genius List…

I bet it’s just a sugar pill. Exotic insurance policies are expensive and prone to failure, and this place is full of psychics who can sense disloyalty.

Maybe it is a poison and they have something that will arrest it (bond) but not clear it out of your system. That would work. A temporary fix that must be renewed as long as they are employed with them. Smart in a fiendish kind of way.
